Passive Solar Energy

Posted in Solar energy facts

Unlike active solar energy which uses solar panels for water heating or the production of electricity. Passive solar energy relies largely on designing the house to maximize the incoming radiation from the sun.

Passive solar energy does not require pumps or fans to maintain a comfortable house temperature, and offer a big reduction in cost over solar panel installation.

A ‘solar house’ can be specifically designed to maximize the sun’s radiation to act as a ‘collector’ or equally an existing house can be adapted to use passive energy. In either case a mix of both passive and active solar energy can be obtained, if desired.

Solar Energy

Posted in Solar energy facts

The fundamental laws of physics state that energy cannot be created or destroyed. It can only change its form.

We digest food which creates potential energy for our bodies, which changes into kinetic energy as we rub our hands together on a cold day and the kinetic energy is converted into heat energy. So energy does indeed change its form, and there are many kinds of energy such as solar energy.

Solar energy is often referred to as ‘alternative energy’ in that it is another form of energy which can provide for the energy demands of modern society without using fossil fuels.

Solar Energy Costs

Posted in Solar energy facts

In most countries today the cost of electricity obtained from the traditional sources of hydrocarbon fuels is rapidly increasing. In parts of the USA energy prices are going up at a rate of 6% per year, in recent times in the UK prices increased by as much as 30%.

In central Europe recently natural gas supplies from Russia where interrupted resulting in thousands being without any heating or lighting energy at all. Solar energy if properly managed can provide all energy needs, but what does solar energy cost?

Solar energy is becoming cheaper, in fact it is about 8 times less expensive today than it was 20 years ago. Despite the political and scientific wrangling which goes on, it is fair to say that most thinking people are aware of the fact of global warming, and the need for renewable energy sources.

Photovoltaic Solar Cells

Posted in Solar energy facts

Photovoltaic solar cells are a result of the space program. They were being used primarily for powering the electrical systems for space satellites as far back as 1958.Today they are  used in a wide variety of commodities ranging from sunglasses, to charging stations for electric vehicles.

The current demand by our ever expanding population for electricity continues, and one obvious source of both heat and light energy is the sun. On a reasonable sunny day, radiated energy from the sun gives about 1000 watts of energy for every square meter of Earth’s surface.

By using devices which can use the incoming energy from the sun to produce electricity we have an alternative source of energy. After research and development costs have been recovered, a continuing, and almost free source of energy can be provided. One such device is the photovoltaic cell.

Biomass Renewable Energy

Posted in Solar energy facts

With the current problems being experienced, as a result of global warming, and the associated change to the world’s climate.Any reduction in the amount of carbon dioxide emissions to the atmosphere would be beneficial in the long term.

Global warming is caused by an increase in the concentrations of greenhouse gases due to the burning of fossil fuels.

Any alternative method of deriving energy without the use of fossil fuels would benefit planet Earth. The burning of biomass provides such an alternative. It offers a source of renewable energy.

Biomass energy is obtained from plant or animal sources. Since these both contain quantities of carbon dioxide it is reasonable to ask how burning of them could reduce carbon dioxide emissions.

Solar Energy Facts

Posted in Solar energy facts

All the solar energy throughout our solar system is derived from the star we refer to as the sun through nuclear processes.

Without such energy life on planet Earth would not exist since it supplies both heat and light energy, which in turn provides the mechanism of photosynthesis by which our food supply is able to grow.

On planet Earth today there is an almost insatiable demand for electricity, and primarily the electricity is produced by methods which pollute the air which we breath, and may have longer term effects, as yet unknown, on our climate.

Solar Powered Air Conditioning

Posted in Applications of solar technology

It all sounds very simple to do. Have a solar photovoltaic cell panel installed onto the roof, which will convert the sun’s radiated energy to the required electricity to run your air conditioning unit.

The solar panels on the roof will themselves help keep the house cooler by preventing the roofing tiles from heating, and transferring heat to the upper areas of the house. So you now have free air conditioning and a cooler house.

As always with something which sounds simple and easy to obtain, there is a drawback. In this case it is weighing up just how much energy can be obtained from the solar panels against the amount of electricity an air conditioning unit requires.

DIY Solar Energy

Posted in Applications of solar technology

If you are considering having an alternative, ‘greener’ type of energy source for your home, then before dashing out, and paying for such a system to be installed, why not think about ‘doing it yourself’ and indulging in a little DIY.

With the correct motivation, a few tools, solar panels can be made far cheaper than pre-built ones. By following simple instruction a solar panel can be constructed in a very short time. Here’s how.—

Building Your Own Solar Panel.

First get a list of instructions and parts required. These are readily available on the internet. GreenDIYEnergy are particularly useful.

1.      Tools Required. Start the project using a simply designed wooden container. You will need.

Types of Solar Energy

Posted in Solar energy facts

When solar energy is discussed, most people think of solar water heating devices or electricity being obtained by photovoltaic cells contained in solar panels. But there are other types of solar energy which are often not mentioned.

Radiant Energy.

Radiant energy from the sun has been used by generations for its heating effect. On a sunny day it is easy to feel this kind of radiation energy on your body, or on any object exposed to the sun’s rays which will absorb the radiation.

Currently radiant energy is being used as solar energy for producing hot water, by letting the energy heat up water passing through pipes in a container exposed directly to the sun.

Solar Energy Heating

Posted in Applications of solar technology

A large proportion of the household budget is spent on the costs of water heating. So it makes good sense to take advantage of readily available solar energy heating systems, which provide free hot water.

Solar energy water systems can make a big financial saving in household heating, but they require the services of a plumber, and a heating consultant to install, size, and get the system up and running.

The payback period for solar energy heating is about 10 years as opposed to about 25 years for a photovoltaic cell system which provides electricity.
